Now being in my late 30’s things were happening to my body that could no longer be ignored. I sat on some major decisions for a while before coming to the ultimate decision to have a major surgery. I had the option of going out of state to someone who specializes in endo excision but after doing a lot of research decided I was going to have my OBGYN Dr. Sam Ricci complete the procedure. I waited a while to complete the review as I wanted to be able to comment on recovery. I had my hysterectomy (leaving both ovaries) and endo excision completed on Dec 1 2025. I was out of work for approx 6 weeks as I have a very active job but the procedure, recovery process, and even getting back into real life stuff like lifting heavier weights again has all gone as expected on track and very well. Dr. Sam Ricci was so helpful along the way answering all of my questions and super compassionate at all times. When I was considering having the procedure done, I wished there had been more reviews online for the OBGYNs that complete these surgeries on the regular. So although I really didn’t necessarily want to share this vulnerable information, I decided to in hopes that it might help another woman in making her final decision. Wishing all you women in similar situations the best and thank you so much to Dr. Sam Ricci who helped me through one of my most challenging life decisions yet!!Ashley Pratt has been providing my care for the past 6 years and I trust her absolutely — intelligent, thoughtful, kind. My pregnancy was high risk and I had weekly visits for most of the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, so I met with nearly every provider. Dr. Shinners delivered me at Maine Med, and was excellent. Strongly recommend this practice for all women's obstetrical and gynecological care.

However, it is very difficult to get appointments. Several months at least. When you need appointments that are cycle-timed and are dealing with irregularities this is problematic. The nursing staff is rude and dismissive - especially over the phone. I called today to move forward with a procedure the doc and I have been discussing for some time. Nurse first told me that I couldn’t just decide to do this without an appointment to discuss with the doc. She clearly didn’t bother to look at my chart. She was audibly annoyed at my questions seeming to want to get off the phone as quickly as possible. Also couldn’t give me any sense of when I might get a call back because “the doc was out today” and “tomorrow she was seeing patients” and the nurse “wasn’t sure when doc would have a chance to review.” Enormously frustrating and disappointing, but probably on par with many medical offices.I have been seeing Dr. Dawson for over 25 yrs. and will continue, hopefully for many more. it’s worth my 2 hour drive to see one of the best OBGYN doctors in Maine.
