Fertility care is such a delicate journey, and many patients arrive already carrying emotional, physical, and financial stress long before stepping into the clinic. Because of that, small details in communication and patient experience can make a very big difference. From a medical standpoint, the clinic appears organized and busy, but personally I did not feel much individualized attention during the process. Even with reassuring test results, the overall experience felt more administrative than supportive, which can be difficult in a setting centered around fertility treatment. I also found the pricing structure challenging to understand as a self-pay patient. The consultation fee alone was significantly higher than what I have seen elsewhere, and overall treatment estimates appeared substantially above many other clinics. Fertility treatment is already emotionally demanding, so financial transparency and flexibility are incredibly important for patients navigating this process. At Aspire Fertility San Antonio, the clinic is efficient and well-organized, and the support teams (nursing, embryology, finance) are strong. However, my experience with physician communication and decision-making was disappointing. During my first stimulation cycle, a significant protocol change was made without discussing alternatives, despite my clearly stated preference for shared decision-making. After retrieval, I was unable to schedule a debrief for weeks, leaving me in the dark about next steps while ready to move forward. I was also informed of genetic results unexpectedly while out of town, without preparation. When I raised these concerns, the physician acknowledged the delay but explained that debriefs are only done after PGTA results—a fixed policy that was not communicated upfront. I later tried to continue care with a different physician within the clinic, since I did value the overall team. After multiple follow-ups, I was told this is not allowed, a policy that was not communicated earlier and cost me time in an already time-sensitive process. Bottom line: this clinic runs efficiently, but the care model felt directive rather than collaborative. I decided to seek a second opinion, and I’m so thankful I did. During my consultation, I met with Dr. Balthazar, who carefully reviewed my records and truly listened to my fertility journey. She then had me meet with Dr. Kostroun for an exam. It turns out my initial diagnosis from the first clinic was not accurate. Navigating fertility challenges is never easy, and in the past I often left appointments feeling confused, overwhelmed, and discouraged. This experience was completely different. Everything was explained thoroughly, I felt heard, and for the first time in a while—I left with clarity, answers, and even a smile. I’ll be scheduling surgery soon, and I’m hopeful for what’s ahead. I’m incredibly grateful for the care, compassion, and expertise I received here.
I was with this clinic for 3 years, started with IUI but after the 3rd MC I proceeded with IVF. My first transfer was successful and the staff/faculty have always been welcoming. It’s their billing department that is the worst! I was informed 3x the procedure was covered and was given a list of what was not. I have actual paper work showing what rep they spoke to, date/time verified, along with my member insurance policy/group/ID, verifying with ICD and cpt codes complete coverage of the process. But come to me being 7 months along I get a bill for remaining amount due that wasn’t covered by my insurance when at first the clinic said it was, 3x!! Someone didn’t do their job effectively! I would reach out to billing and advise them multiple times on multiple denied claims submitted that they need to resubmit with the correct procedure code in order for my insurance to pay the claim. I wouldn’t get a response from billing through the portal so I would have to call to get an acknowledgment that they will resubmit the corrected claim. Billing and coding completely gave me a hard time and was the most unpleasant experience having to deal with on top of what I was going through. Now im left with a bill that was not covered by my insurance when at first the clinic gave me a sheet showing medical coverage and exclusions through my plan. I was given false information and would have considered a different route prior to proceeding with IVF if I would have known. I take part responsibility in not doing my due diligence but I also trusted this clinic they’d help me esp with insurance, I don’t know what cpt and icd codes they use to bill! Do I have to do their job for them? Now I have to figure out how to fix their mistake because I’m responsible for it. It’s hard now that I have a newborn and still recovering from the hormone therapy after all these years of trying to conceive and being out of work so thanks to the clinic for my baby but shame on the billing department!I was very nervous and definitely not excited about having to go to a fertility clinic.
