What does it take to be a surro-mom?
Becoming a gestational surrogate is a significant medical, legal, and personal commitment. The application is an initial screen, not medical clearance or a promise of acceptance or matching.

Age 21-40. Applicants must be within this range for the baseline program screen.
One to five prior live births. Applicants should be raising at least one child and should have had no major complications in prior pregnancies. The agency and fertility clinic review the full pregnancy and delivery history.
BMI under 35. Exactly 35 is outside the baseline application range. BMI is one screening signal; the fertility clinic makes the final medical-clearance decision.
Smoke-free living and no disqualifying substance use. Current medications and history are reviewed through the screening process.
U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residency. This is a Patriot Conceptions program criterion, not a statement that every jurisdiction uses the same rule.
Current recruitment location. Patriot Conceptions does not recruit surrogates in Louisiana or Nebraska. Laws and program routing can change, so confirm your current location during application.
Financial stability and reliable transportation. Ask a coordinator how the current program treats any public assistance you receive instead of assuming one universal rule.
Authorized background screening. The current process may also include a spouse or partner. Background and substance-use history are reviewed individually rather than reduced to one public yes/no promise.
Psychological screening and counseling. These steps support informed consent, readiness, communication, and the surrogate’s well-being throughout the journey.
Medical and clinic review. Applicants should be willing to complete obstetric-record review, infectious-disease testing, medical evaluation, insurance review, and other clinic-specific steps as applicable.
